“And did you think that We created you aimlessly, and that you would not be brought back to Us?” (Qur'an 23:115). This profound question from the Qur'an strikes at the very heart of human existence. It challenges us to reflect on the purpose of our creation. As thinking, rational beings, no one appreciates being accused of working without a goal. Indeed, acting aimlessly contradicts the very principles of reason and intelligence. If humans detest aimless action, how much more so can we expect the Creator—whose wisdom is infinite and beyond human comprehension—to create without purpose? The Qur'an makes it abundantly clear that everything in this world, including our own existence, serves a greater purpose. The Common Misunderstanding
However, when it comes to the purpose of life, a vast number of people have fallen into a trap of misunderstanding. Some people believe that material well-being is the sole purpose of life. Their guiding principle can be summed up in the creed: "Every person should work according to his ability, and he should receive according to his need." For such people, life revolves around acquiring wealth, comfort, and security. The ultimate goal, in their eyes, is a better standard of living—a bigger house, a fancier car, more luxurious possessions. But this mindset blurs the critical distinction between the means of life and the aim of life. Let us illustrate this with a simple analogy.
Understanding Through Examples: The Farmer and the Dairy-man
Imagine a farmer. He works hard every day, cultivating his land. He mixes fertilizers into the soil, irrigates his crops, and takes great care in tending to his fields. Now, if you were to ask him, "What is the purpose of your work?" would he answer by saying, "The purpose is to spread fertilizer and irrigate the land"? Certainly not. These actions, while essential, are merely the means of achieving his true purpose—growing crops, such as maize, for human consumption. Similarly, consider a dairy farmer. He dedicates his time and energy to feeding his cows, caring for them, and protecting them from harm. Yet, when asked about the purpose of keeping the cows, he will not say that his goal is simply to feed and protect them. His ultimate aim is the production of milk. In both cases, the means (irrigating fields, feeding cows) are essential for achieving the purpose (producing crops, obtaining milk). But no sensible person would confuse the two.
The Fallacy of Materialism
And yet, when it comes to human life, many people fail to make this same distinction. They confuse the means of life with the aim of life. They believe that working hard, accumulating wealth, and enjoying life's comforts are not just means, but the very aim of existence. But when a philosophy teaches that bread and butter are the ultimate goals of life, it ceases to be a philosophy rooted in reason and wisdom. It becomes a fallacy.
The Higher Purpose of Human Life
In fact, human life serves a far higher and nobler purpose. The Qur'an explicitly states: “And I did not create jinn and human beings except that they may know and worship Me.” (Qur'an 51:56). The purpose of our creation, as ordained by the Creator, is to recognize and obey Him. Our lives are a journey of seeking knowledge, understanding our Creator, and aligning ourselves with His divine guidance. This purpose transcends the fleeting nature of material wealth and comfort. While physical needs are important, they are merely the means through which we survive. Our true purpose is much greater—serving and submitting to God, fulfilling our duties to Him, and seeking spiritual fulfilment. When we forget this essential purpose of our creation, we reduce ourselves to a state far lower than that of cows and crops. For they fulfil their roles in the natural order with precision and without confusion. But when humans lose sight of their divine purpose, they degrade themselves, chasing after the fleeting and temporary rather than focusing on the eternal and meaningful.
Conclusion
In conclusion, life is not aimless, nor is it solely about material gain. We were created with a higher purpose in mind, a purpose that transcends the physical and material aspects of existence. Just as the farmer works to produce crops and the dairy-man to produce milk, we were placed in this world to recognize, worship, and serve our Creator. This is the true aim of life, and understanding this reality is the key to fulfilling our potential as human beings.
